AUTOMOTIVE FLEET I JULY 2017 16 The majority of commercial fleets responding to AFs annual survey report that new vehicle ordering volume will be either larger or comparable to the prior model year due to business growth and the need to replace aging assets BY MIKE ANTICH A n AF assessment of the 2018 model year indicates it will be a strong asset acquisition year based on a survey of the buying inclinations of more than 350 corporate fleets The survey was conducted by Automotive Fleet in late May 2017 By a two to one ratio the majority of commercial fleet managers responding to AFs annual acquisition survey reported that their new vehicle ordering volume will be either larger or comparable to the prior model year However the commercial fleet market is diverse and there were a smaller number of companies that reported they will decrease the volume of their 2018 MY fleet ordering due to a larger than normal fleet buy in 2017 MY downsizing The majority of surveyed companies will either increase or maintain the same level of purchases for 2018 MY new vehicle orders Some fleets will increase new vehicle orders due to business growth and the need to replace aging vehicles Orders from the energy industry will increase as their fleets have been aging due to minimal new vehicle purchases in prior model years Corporate initiatives mandate the acquisition of the most fuel efficient models able to fulfill the fleet application Shift to crossovers and the downsizing to the next vehicle segment or specing smaller displacement engines AT A GLANCE BUYING INCLINATIONS 2018 MY POINT TO A STRONG MODEL YEAR
